Reimagining a 19th century villa, Ponsonby - New Zealand

As one of the oldest homes in Auckland’s Ponsonby, this grand residence with its colourful past, is now home to an entrepreneurial couple and their children.

Undergoing a six-month renovation, Olivia Moon (owner of Nodi Rugs) and her husband Jeremy, restored the stately home resulting in a refreshed modern interior.

All interior finishing’s were selected by the couple with the architectural design and layout being contributed by Barbara Webster including specific kitchen and bathroom designs.

In terms of the overall creative vision Olivia said “I didn’t have a set inspiration or mood board per say, I just wanted to create a warm, welcoming home that I could relax in and enjoy with my family and friends - this really dictated a lot of the decisions. Owning a rug company means I see things from the ground up when renovating, so the rug selections led the way for the general feel of our home.”

“I wanted curtain fabric that would add texture without being too heavy in the space. I love the slubbiness and weight of the Satori stonewash linen. It lets just the right amount of light in, whilst still offering privacy and a natural layer between home and the outside world.”

Olivia spent a lot of time finding and selecting all the beautiful furniture, she says “this has been a process that’s gone on for about five years and still isn’t complete. I am a strong believer in buy once and buy well, so I feel quite happy to wait for the right piece knowing it will be with me for a long time.”

Combining paint, plaster, marble, linen, jute and wool, the textural earthy palette of soft greys and neutrals accented with warm shades of brick and chartreuse, has achieved a warmth and elegance that offsets the artisan Nodi rugs and collection of artworks.

The beautiful timber sash windows throughout the home are complemented by lush drapery in Mokum Satori.   Satori is a 100% linen, wide width curtain fabric that is stone washed for an organic look.

“I wanted curtain fabric that would add texture without being too heavy in the space. I love the slubbiness and weight of the Satori stonewash linen. It lets just the right amount of light in, whilst still offering privacy and a natural layer between home and the outside world.”

The result of this renovation is a home that is fit for family living.  Through the considered selection of furniture and accessories selected from various eras, Olivia and Jeremy have created a unique aesthetic – one of natural and handcrafted pieces happily sitting alongside antique discoveries, and of course exquisite rugs.
