A 15-year-old lifestyle property in the beautiful countryside of Kumeu on the outskirts of Auckland was home to four boisterous boys – now adults, and it was decided the timing was right to renovate this much loved home.

The client engaged Karen from KCandy&Co. for her expert knowledge of colour and familiarity with their lifestyle (the children of each family being friends).

The brief included a new colour scheme throughout, new carpet, curtains/blinds and furniture and lighting.  Dated bathrooms were updated to offer a more contemporary look.

Design inspiration came from the surrounding planting, landscaping and countryside setting.  Subtle tones with an emphasis on texture and light was the agreed goal.  The new colour palette deleted all the dated cream coloured doors and surrounds. Warm greys were introduced and paired with accent darks.

"Karen's eye for colour and pushing my boundaries a little has produced an amazing result.  Karen chose furniture and other items which would blend really well with our existing pieces”

Carolyn O'Leary, homeowner.

Dulux's Castlecliff was specified in the family TV room to create cosiness, and Dulux Manorburn Half for the main living and hallway spaces.  The colour palette was tied together with a light sandy shade of a luxurious Westminster carpet from Belgotex.

The client had some much-loved vintage and antique furniture which were re-stained black, the result was better than anticipated and brought character and integrity to the spaces.

Kovac's supplied both sofas for the main living and family rooms. The Axel sofa was covered in James Dunlop Static colour turmeric, and the Detriot sofa in Mokum Strata colour charcoal, with custom black feet in steel.

Furtex's Ulster Rug and Weave's Rattan black and Nova velvet cushions added texture and patterned accents.

The dining decor and furniture features French Country Collections, and Maytime's Venice cabinet for much needed storage while the client’s existing wooden dining chairs were re-stained black. The dining pendants are Solar Pendants by Coombes & Gabbie.

The designer was thrilled with feedback from the client which was the pulling together of a cohesive plan which they could work through whilst still living in the house.
