Connecticut home gets the works

Kitchen Before

Function and durability: the criteria set to restyle this chic yet sophisticated home in Rowayton, Connecticut, to better suit the needs of a young family with a toddler and dog.

The homeowner herself had a background in the design industry, so naturally, she was brainstorming ideas in her head from the get-go. She enlisted Townsend & Co Interiors to help marry both her and her husband’s different ideas: his love of neutrals and modern style with her more eclectic aesthetic, embracing vibrancy in colour and texture.

Significant home renovations had already taken place so Townsend & Co Interiors focused on editing and refining the interior design journey, helping the client refine ideas, think about the details and source the components, essentially pulling everything together to deliver a cohesive space.

“My client has a great eye for colour and pattern, and an untamed enthusiasm for design,” says lead interior designer Townsend Lloyd. “It is always fun to work with someone really passionate about their project and who understands the power of good design.”

Townsend’s role has been more of an editor’s journey. “My client’s love of pattern has inspired me most; I tend to gravitate toward crisp tailoring, neutral palettes, and elegant texture, and this project has encouraged me to play with more colour and pattern than usual!”

Townsend & Co Interiors are implementing an overall vision for the entire home. We will post each phase of the development as they are finished throughout 2021.

PHASE ONE: The Kitchen and Family Room

Out with the old, in with the new!

The kitchen was redesigned entirely, bringing a brand-new look and feel to the space. What was once a dark, narrow area is now a bright, fresh, and breathtaking kitchen. The client extended the back of the house to allow room in the kitchen and family room for a custom built-in breakfast banquette and centre island.

When it came to the interior design, the client shared their vision with Townsend and created a classic and timeless yet modern aesthetic – something they would never grow tired of.

The client chose Mokum’s Eternal fabric in Aluminum and French Blue colourways for the throw pillows, and Strata in a charcoal tone for the seat cushion, selecting durable, comfortable textiles that provided a pop of colour in an otherwise neutral space.

Being a young family home, durable fabrics were not just important but a necessity. With a toddler and small dog who is king of the castle, it was imperative to have materials that wear well with the non-stop action of an active family in a high-traffic area.

Watch this space for bathroom and bedroom reveals coming soon in 2021.
