Ascot Green is part of a collaborative residential development, overlooking the iconic Eagle Farm Racecourse in Ascot, Brisbane. Having completed an earlier renovation project for her son, Sylvia felt confident that interior designer Kim Black, of Kim Black Design, could help her transition from her traditional 4-bedroom Queenslander to the newly built apartment.

Developing a textured palette was vital to connecting the interior spaces and although the apartment’s ability to accommodate visiting friends and family was important, for the most part Sylvia is the sole inhabitant of her home. “We had such fun with a totally feminine palette. Right from the entry foyer you are greeted with volumes of colour in pinks, reds, and mauves, this is balanced with the more chocolate, earthy tones and textures in the wallpaper in the entry and master bedroom,” says Kim.

It was essential that Sylvia’s existing furniture and antiques, acquired while living in a character home, be incorporated into the contemporary space alongside new modern pieces. Kim sought to reflect Sylvia’s changed lifestyle while also stamping her personality on the home.

Investing in custom joinery and furniture throughout the home helped to personalize her interiors. In the bedroom, an armchair upholstered in Brooklyn by James Dunlop accompanies the bedhead which is covered in the intricately layered Contexture by James Dunlop.

This theme of neutral, tactile upholstery continues in the lounge where the couch is covered in Lusk by James Dunlop, a durable linen and polyester composition with a textured linen look. It is one of Kim’s favourite fabrics because “it just makes up beautifully and is long wearing for clients.”

To diffuse the bright Brisbane sunshine streaming through the 7th floor windows, sheer curtains were crafted in Cavalier by James Dunlop Essentials. “I love the texture and the linen (30%) and polyester (70%) blend for the best of both worlds – the natural fibres of the linen and the stability of the polyester.”
