Having worked with the client’s previously on their city home, Lume Design was engaged to carry out the interior design of their client’s new holiday home located on a quiet hillside, overlooking Banks Peninsula and the Akaroa Harbour.
The brief was to design a space that was not overly coastal or typically Scandinavian, but with aspects of each genre. A place that expressed the owner’s love of land and sea through design that was both beautiful and thoughtful yet still practical. Robust enough to withstand children, dogs and sand from the beach.
Though effortless in appearance, the interiors are a result of a complex approach where each element of the design plays a vital role, while at the same time celebrating the architecture and livability of each space. The level of design detail throughout the home is evident. Deliberately pared-back, the minimal furnishings include curated objects and sculptural statements to lift the home from a typical “kiwi bach”.
The holiday home required furniture that three generations of family and pets could enjoy and wouldn’t feel too precious about. Lume Design specified Kirkby Design Dakota Suede in colour Comet, a double-sided faux suede that has a soft, smooth finish and supple handle, providing the luxurious quality of suede but with the practicality and durability of man-made fibres.
