A Garden Designer’s home oasis

It’s not surprising that this stunning and well considered outdoor space of a family home in Melbourne is the work of its owner Ben Scott, a Garden Designer and Horticulturist.  A true plantsman, Ben’s horticultural background and impeccably honed design skills are showcased perfectly in this idyllic setting.

With 20 years of experience in the industry, Ben has utilised his specialist skill set to create a cohesive alfresco area in this family home where he lives with his wife and two young girls in the leafy suburb of Hawthorn.

“Blue worked in perfectly and tied in with the blue ottoman we have inside. We are thrilled with the selection. The sofa is one of the best investments we made. We love sitting and relaxing beside the pool, it’s used all the time.”

Their recent house renovation and addition naturally progressed to the landscaping. His brief was to design an an outdoor area that had a close connection with the house and swimming pool. This connection from pool to house was a key focus for Ben’s design. Past projects have shown that there is a strong connection between the pool, the house and the outdoor living areas.  “So I was inspired by past projects and where that strong connection between spaces was important.”  Ben says.
The new wing of the home now acts as a pool house, offering the strong connection between pool and house that Ben was after.
Not only is this a pool for swimming, it also doubles as a spectacular water feature, that changes depending on the light and weather. Fully tiled in a beautiful deep green mosaic tile, the pool is a stunning shade of turquoise, when the sun is out, and a reflective charcoal, when it’s overcast.
A key design feature of the pool is the above ground infinity edge and planter box trough that comply with regulations to eliminate the need for a traditional pool fence. This above ground feature is what promotes the connection of the indoors, alfresco and pool areas.
Industry leading pool builders, Laguna Pools, were engaged to construct this innovative, custom-concrete pool.  They executed the design with precision, and developed the highly technical hydraulic system such a high quality pool requires.
The alfresco lounging/dining space includes an insitu concrete fireplace/BBQ bench with limestone paving, black and steel finishes with charred timber cladding on the building.
With a fairly monochromatic colour palette made up of grey stone and limestone paving, Ben and his wife loved the idea of outdoor velvet.  The Trace lounge suite by Tait covered in Mokum’s South Beach velvet made the perfect choice with its high performance attributes. “We loved the idea of having a fabric that is extremely soft and comforting to sit or lie on, and we chose the blue colour to add a splash of colour to the area and the fabric is made to withstand the weather”.  Ben says.
