Just the right amount; the essentials: Lagom. This single word encapsulates the essence of the Swedish way of life and the basis of their national psyche, ‘enough, sufficient, moderation, balance.’ With the Essentials collection by James Dunlop, this philosophy has been the seed of inspiration to produce a comprehensive collection that emanates simplicity and raw beauty.
Together, the six designs incorporate a little bit of everything; pattern and plain, weave and print, but all in moderation with something for everyone. The colour palette across this collection also reflects Lagom; primarily neutral with complimentary seasonal colours and a feature tourmaline blue.
The Essentials collection provides a well-balanced and fundamental offering of drapery and upholstery product; not too little, not too much, just right.
The signature print of the collection, Solandra, is a beautiful dispersing leaf design. With a gradient colour effect through the silhouetted form, the design has a lovely balance against the semi-sheer base cloth. It is the perfect element to soften a space, adding an artistic aesthetic that is paired back to not over dominate. Solandra is printed on a wide-width polyester cotton base cloth and can be lined to add density and strength to the design.
This geometric drapery has a perfect balance of colour, scale, form and composition to create a soft yet striking design. Magnis has soft tonal combinations give a stunning dusty aesthetic, following the collections seasonal tones and predominantly neutral colour palette. Finished with a wondrous soft handle, and teamed with subtle slub yarns, creating contrast to the strong structural design element but balancing perfectly, it’s just right.
Paired with Maro, Kapa is a two-tone construction, with a modern twist on the classic herringbone. A textured plain from a distance, but a stunning contrast of complimenting yarn tones when viewed closely. Kapa perfectly reflects the Essentials ethos of ‘not too little, not too much, just right.’ The colours are consistent with the other designs in the Essentials collection, particularly complimenting Maro, with soft neutrals and pops of colour.
Maro exemplifies Lagom, ‘enough’ and ‘sufficient’ are two words we link to this essential two-tone plain upholstery product. It has a mixed composition of synthetic and natural fibres, with the natural fibres giving an element of luxury and enhancing its soft handle. The colours are consistent with the other designs in the Essentials collection, particularly complimenting Kapa, with soft neutrals and pops of colour that reflect the seasons.
Beauty in simplicity is true with the plain of the Essentials collection, Lunos. Suitable for lightweight upholstery, drapery and accessories, it has a stunning soft handle with the tactility created through its linen and viscose composition. The colours have been developed to coordinate and unify the designs and the collection, primarily mineral and seasonal tones. The nature of the piece dying technique can involve a slight variation of colour, adding to the organic beauty of the weave.
Encapsulating the concept of Lagom, Stratos offers a stripe design that is balanced with enough texture and interest to intrigue, but pulled back to a two-tone lineal design. A little bit more than a simple stripe, Stratos has a crushed aesthetic and is a unique drapery option. Its broad vertical stripe is made more subtle with the neutral colourways and pairing of similar tones. Flicks of colour in the weave appear in small slubs giving it a natural aesthetic and organic quality.
